Kenya's 5G Network Subscriptions Surge to 1.9 Million as Users Consume Data at Triple National Average
Kenyas' 5G mobile network is proving to be a huge hit, with 1.9 million users signed up as of March 2026, just four years or so on from when it first hit the commercial market.
5G Adoption in Kenya Really Starting to Take Off
The Communications Authority of Kenya has some stats that show 5G subscriptions jumped up by 170,656 users from January to March - that's a pretty healthy 9.8 percent increase from 1.7 million users just three months earlier. Its pretty clear now that tech like this is just really starting to take off among Kenyan consumers.
The growth is largely because more and more people are using 5G to do things like stream video, make mobile payments, create content and do video conferencing - and more and more handsets are coming with 5G compatibility.
People are Eating Through their Data Allowances like they used to eat through a bucket of Fries
One of the really interesting trends from the CA's numbers is just how much data 5G users are consuming. This quarter, our 5G users blew past the 100 million GB mark for the first time - that's 102.01 million GB to be exact. Thats up a massive 27 percent on the previous quarter, which shows just how hungry people are for bandwidth-intensive services.
Average 5G User Eating Through Data like its going out of Fashion
The average 5G user is now eating through 53.5 GB per quarter - that is more than three times the national average of 15.1 GB for all mobile broadband users. That highlights the massive difference in performance that 5G is making.
Overall though, the national average still only just hit 800 million GB for the quarter - that's up 6 percent from the quarter before that. Not bad, but still nothing like the speeds that 5G is capable of.
5G is the Enabler of all these new tech services
The beauty of 5G is that its designed from the ground up to be super fast, with low latency and the ability to connect loads and loads of devices all at the same time. This means that people can stream video and play games in real time, and do loads of other things that would be pretty impossible on a 4G network.
A Brief History of 5G in Kenya
Kenya's 5G journey began with Safaricom some four years ago in 2021 - they started running trials back then and eventually went live with a commercial service in October 2022. Airtel Kenya then jumped in mid 2023 and suddenly the whole market started to take off.
4G is Still the King
Of course, despite all the fuss over 5G, 4G is still the dominant tech in Kenya - with 45.9 million subscribers as of March 2026. But what is very interesting is that 3G and 2G users are now starting to decline - with 3G down 654,000 and 2G down 662,000 during the quarter.
Barriers to full 5G Adoption
Of course, there are still a few hurdles to overcome - most notably the cost of devices. Many entry level phones out there still only support 4G, which means that 5G is mostly the preserve of those with a bit more money to spend. But even with this barrier in place, the fact that there are now more than 50 million smartphones in Kenya is a game changer - giving 5G a much bigger pool of potential customers to draw from.
