Dongfeng and ePureMotion Launch Electric Vehicles in Kenya with Local Assembly Plans

Admin Dec 17, 2025 1

Chinese automaker Dongfeng has entered into an agreement with Kenya's ePureMotion to start a local assembly of electric vehicles owing to a growing demand in the sector. The partnership will see introduction of two passenger EV models, marking Dongfeng’s first formal entry into Kenya’s EV segment, backed by local retail and service support.

New EV Models for Urban Commuters

The initial rollout will feature the ePureCitie compact hatchback in two trims: Classic and Lux.

  • Classic – Priced at Sh4 million, offering an estimated 330 km driving range.

  • Lux – Priced at Sh4.5 million, with a 430 km range and advanced driver-assistance features.

The two models are aimed at Kenya's urban commuters, ride-hailing services as well as for corporate fleets.

Local Assembly to Boost Competitiveness

According to ePureMotion, it's collaboration with Associated Vehicle Assemblers (AVA) will see some models assembled locally which will help in getting some tax incentives such as :

  • Exemption from the 35% import duty on fully-built units

  • Reduced 10% excise duty

The anticipated lower taxes will most likely reduce vehicle costs, improve spare parts availability, and allow faster market response as demand grows.

“We’ll assemble the vehicles next year, supporting Kenya’s industrialisation agenda,” said Gilbert Saggia, founder and CEO of ePureMotion.

Expansion Plans for 2026

Dongfeng also plans to launch additional passenger and light commercial EVs in the first quarter of 2026, targeting private buyers, corporate fleets, logistics operators, and public-sector users.

“Expect more Dongfeng models next quarter, national charging expansion, and increased local assembly with AVA,” Saggia added.

The partnership will also include an integrated EV showroom and charging technology centre aimed at offering vehicle sales, charging solutions, after-sales service, and accessories in one location.

Dongfeng’s Kenyan Presence and Market Growth

Dongfeng currently has an established footprint in Kenya through DFAC Kenya Ltd, its commercial vehicle distributor and assembler. It will join a small group of firms locally assembling electric cars, as most local EV output has focused on two-wheelers and buses.

According to the Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority (EPRA), Kenya had 6,442 registered electric vehicles by June 2025 which was majorly driven by growth in public charging infrastructure. ePureMotion has also set up charging stations in several Nairobi malls, improving accessibility for EV users.
