In a significant development, the Kenya Medical Training College (KMTC) has been granted a certificate of registration and accreditation by the Kenya National Qualifications Authority (KNQA) as a Qualification Awarding Institution (QAI). This recognition follows a thorough evaluation process, culminating in the endorsement of KMTC by the KNQA.
As a result of this accreditation, the Higher National Diploma Qualifications offered by the College now fall under the KNQA level 7 classification, which deems them equivalent to a Bachelor’s degree. These qualifications are also considered on par with certifications such as Certified Public Accountant (CPA) III, Certified Public Secretary (CPS), and Master Craft Person I. CPA Rosemary Njogu, the acting Council Chair of KNQA, commended KMTC for its pivotal role in Kenya’s health sector and acknowledged the college’s contribution to safeguarding the well-being of millions of Kenyans. She emphasized the importance of the College’s courses, which not only build critical medical skills but also integrate the effective use of modern technology. Njogu further emphasized that KMTC’s accreditation as a QAI holds great significance for Kenya’s medical field and the broader African Health Sector.
During the certificate presentation ceremony, Ambassador Zachary Muburi-Muita, the Chairperson of KMTC’s Board, conveyed his appreciation for KMTC’s achievement. He highlighted how the decision to register qualifications and learners with KNQA instills confidence in the college’s programs, ultimately attracting more foreign students. Muburi-Muita also emphasized that this accreditation solidifies KMTC’s position as a premier Middle-Level Medical Training College, both in Kenya and internationally. He noted with pleasure that graduates of KMTC are now globally connected to training and career opportunities, as their qualifications align with international standards and are verifiable by potential employers and higher education institutions.
To date, a total of 42 KMTC qualifications, meeting the accreditation requirements of KNQF, have been registered on the Kenya National Qualifications Framework (KNQF) portal. A collaborative effort between technical officers from KNQA and KMTC is underway to ensure the remaining qualifications are registered by the end of this year.
Dr. Kelly Oluoch, the Chief Executive Officer of KMTC, affirmed the college’s commitment to enhancing its processes to ensure the graduates meet the expectations of employers and the community they serve. The accreditation provides assurance that KMTC’s programs are globally recognized, thus enhancing the employability of its graduates. Dr. Oluoch pledged to continuously improve processes and leverage cutting-edge technology to maintain the college’s high standards of quality. Furthermore, she expressed optimism that KMTC’s training programs would be further enhanced through the implementation of new ideas.
Dr. Juma Mukhwana, CEO of KNQA, emphasized the importance of improving the accessibility of KMTC’s training programs in an increasingly complex global market. He emphasized that by aligning the quality of programs with global standards and enhancing the marketability of talents acquired, KMTC can maintain its competitive edge.
Dr. Nyawira Mwangi, Deputy Director of Academics at KMTC, highlighted the institution’s diverse range of 93 programs designed to meet the growing demand for health training not only in Kenya but also in other parts of the world.
It is worth noting that 57,268 KMTC alumni have already registered with KNQA, indicating completion of their education between 2016 and 2021. Furthermore, an additional 16,000 seniors are expected to graduate and become eligible for enrollment on December 1, 2022.
