KRA Recovers Sh6.8 Billion Through iWhistle Platform as Anonymous Tips Expose Tax Evaders

The KRA has scored a big win thanks to tips from anonymous whistleblowers, collecting Sh6.8 billion in lost revenue in the last financial year - a massive 61.13% jump from the Sh4.22 billion collected the year before. And it's not just numbers - the increase in successful recoveries is a clear indication that the government's crackdown on tax evasion and corruption is starting to pay off.

It's Your Country, Investigate And Report Corruption

The latest figures show a shift in the way KRA is approaching enforcement. Rather than relying solely on routine audits, its now using more intelligence from the public to plug the gaps where cheating often slips through the cracks. That is to say, KRA is utilizing people who are willing to come forward with information about tax dodging and other forms of malpractice.

The data shows that 45 insider-based integrity cases were reported to iWhistle, and KRA took action on them - and that's only part of a bigger story. In all, the agency investigated 255 staff members, did 41 lifestyle audits and over 2,100 background checks, as part of a much broader look at their workforce.

Inside the iWhistle System

Commissioner-General Dr. Lilian Nyawanda says the iWhistle system has become a reliable source of actionable information, sending both enforcement actions and internal disciplinary steps into high gear. "It's something that may seem simple, but in any one month we get a lot of reports," she explains. "Then we have a team that's able to actually follow up on those reports and get some results."

The iWhistle system lets the public and KRA staff report tax irregularities without having to reveal their identities. It has a unique reporting code that lets them keep their heads down while the KRA does its job, and it lets the KRA keep an eye on case follow-up.

Rewards For Those Who Come Forward

KRA offers a reward to informants who come forward with information that leads to a successful recovery of tax money. That reward is five percent of what's recovered, up to a maximum of Sh5 million per case - though if you identify some unassessed taxes and the KRA recovers that too, you can get a six percent reward, capped at Sh500,000.

The Battle Continues

Earlier in the year, KRA suspended six of its own employees, including a few senior folk, and took the permits away from 21 cargo clearing agents - all in response to a major tax evasion scheme they uncovered at the Mombasa port. They also recovered over Sh450 million.

Building A Culture For Integrity

Dr. Nyawanda has a message for anyone tempted to get involved in corruption - they're not wanted at the KRA: "We are committed to building a culture of transparency at KRA - one that makes it easy for every single Kenyan to trust us," she says. "There's no place for corruption here."
