Kenyan car assembler Mobius Motors is back in business with new vehicle models in July and December 2025 after a Silver Box buyout.

Silver Box Has Secured Mobius’ Future

Mobius Motors which was on the verge of liquidation in August 2024 has reopened its Nairobi service centre and is producing the Mobius III which will be rolled out in July 2025. The company will also be launching a brand new model in December.

In the management shake up after the acquisition John Kavila has been appointed Chief Operating Officer (COO) taking over from Nicolas Guibert.

"Mobius Motors has built a great foundation and we want to build on that by expanding our market share and increasing accessibility to Kenyan consumers" said Kavila.

Outgoing COO Guibert is confident in Mobius’ future under Silver Box’s management, highlighting plans to develop a wider service network, launch new models and make Mobius a major player in Africa’s automotive industry.

** Regulatory Clearance for the Buyout**

The Competition Authority of Kenya (CAK) approved the acquisition in October 2024 and said the transaction did not raise competition or public interest concerns since the company was small.

"This will save a failing firm, save jobs and enable the business to continue contributing positively to the economy" noted CAK Director General David Kemei.

The Road To Recovery: What Went Wrong?

Founded by UK born entrepreneur Joel Jackson, Mobius Motors wanted to design rugged, affordable SUVs for Kenya’s tough terrain. Priced at KES1.3 million its flagship model was seen as a cost effective alternative to imported pre owned SUVs.

However financial pressures, tax increases and rising operational costs made it hard for the company to sustain production. In August 2024 Mobius Motors announced its closure, called a creditors meeting to finalise liquidation plans.Government Intervention
The government saw the importance of local vehicle assembly and Trade and Investment PS Abubakar Hassan pushed for corporate recovery and restructuring mechanisms which led to Silver Box’s investment and now Mobius has a second chance.
