Kenya’s home internet landscape is changing fast with Internet Service Providers (ISPs) offering faster speeds to meet growing demand. The latest Communications Authority of Kenya (CA) stats show a big shift in consumer preference, with most subscribers opting for speeds above 10 Mbps.
Faster Internet Demand
As of December 2024, 39.7% of fixed internet customers preferred speeds between 10 Mbps and 30 Mbps, that’s a 49.80% increase in 6 months. Previously most subscribers were on speeds between 2 Mbps and 10 Mbps.
Even more shocking is the 1,071.19% growth in users on 100 Mbps to 1 Gbps, from 15,226 to 178,326 in the same period. Many users bypassed the 30 Mbps to 100 Mbps and jumped to ultra-fast broadband.
ISP Packages Adjustments
To meet this high-speed demand, the top 10 ISPs have revised their packages, most are now offering entry level speeds of 5 Mbps or higher.
Safaricom, the largest ISP, discontinued their 10 Mbps plan in 2024, now offering minimum 15 Mbps.
Poa Internet, Dimensions Data and Vijiji Home are the only major providers still offering packages below 10 Mbps.
Fixed Internet Penetration Still Low
Despite this growth, fixed internet penetration is still low, only 3.33% of Kenyans subscribe to home broadband.
Total fixed internet subscribers grew from 1,500,940 in June to 1,718,679 by December 2024.
Safaricom has the most subscribers 621,149, with a 36.1% market share.
The Future of Fixed Broadband in Kenya
With more users demanding higher speeds, ISPs will likely phase out lower speed packages and push for fiber expansion to increase access. But cost, infrastructure and rural connectivity are still big hurdles for wider adoption.Going forward fast and cheap internet will be the game changer to bridge the digital gap and drive innovation in smart home, remote work and digital services.
