The NHIF has migrated to (SHIF) as part of Kenya’s health reforms. SHIF aims to provide affordable and inclusive healthcare for all Kenyans.
To avoid any disruptions in your health coverage, it’s important to keep your SHIF account active. Regularly checking your SHIF status helps you get update on contributions, avoid penalties and plan for medical expenses.
How to Check Your SHIF Status
There are multiple ways to check your SHIF status:
Via SMS
Online through the SHIF portal
Using USSD code
Visit a SHIF office
Option 1: Check SHIF Status via SMS
This is the quickest way to check your SHIF account details.
Step 1: Compose an SMS
Open your SMS app and compose a new message.
Step 2: Enter the Format
Type: ID[space]Your ID Number (e.g.,
ID 12345678
).
Step 3: Send the SMS
Send the message to 21101.
Step 4: Get Your Status
You will receive an SMS with your SHIF account details including last contribution date and current coverage status.
Option 2: Check SHIF Status Online
You can access your SHIF details anytime on the online portal.
Step 1: Visit the SHIF Portal
Open your browser and go to SHIF Self-Care Portal.
The NHIF portal is still active during the transition period.
Step 2: Log In or Register
If you have an account, log in using your ID number and password.
New users must register with ID number, email address and phone number.
Step 3: Access Your Account
Go to Member Contributions or Account Status.
Here you can view:
Contribution history
Payment status
Coverage details
Employer contributions (if applicable)
Press SHIF services.
Select Check Status.
Step 3: View Your Details
You will receive an SMS with account status, contributions and coverage details.
Option 4: Visit a SHIF Office
If you prefer to verify in person, you can visit a SHIF branch.
