In its ambitious move that's aimed at supporting green energy initiatives in the country, Mwalimu National Sacco has partnered with Startimes to facilitate the acquisition of solar systems by its members. It is an initiative that will be rolled out within two years, providing subsidized financing options to teachers and other members of Sacco for the installation of solar energy solutions in their respective home and workplaces.
A New Path toward Solar Energy for Sacco Members
For this deal, Mwalimu Sacco has set an initial budget of Sh250 million for the first year, which will rise to Sh500 million in the second year. The project, according to Mwalimu Sacco National Chairman Joel Gachari, will start by sensitizing the members through key events such as during Annual General Meetings and Education Days. The deployment of financing options that would allow solar products to be more accessible at reduced costs will ensue in this phase.
The loan facility will enable members to buy solar products on low-interest facilities, helping them to significantly reduce their electricity bills. Startimes, a leading solar solutions vendor will be partnering with Mwalimu Sacco to ensure its members switch to renewable energy. Star times Solar System Partnership Business Manager Grace Njenga said the project would have wider coverage and reach across the country, either urban or rural areas.
Addressing the Increasing Demand for Solar Energy in Kenya
This partnership deal comes at a time when there is an unprecedented adoption of solar energy, particularly in urban centres like Nairobi, where homeowners have turned to it as a way of countering the increasing costs of electricity. The most recent peak was attained when Kenya's solar power generation commissioned the 40 MW Alten Kenya Solarfarms plant in Uasin Gishu County, pushing the country's solar output to 491.48 million kilowatt-hours in 2023-a rise of 28.1 percent from last year.
In this regard, the joint initiative by Mwalimu Sacco and Startimes promises to ensure easy financing for solar installations. The project is targeting teachers, principals, and other SACCO members in a bid aimed at ensuring that they reduce their reliance on conventional power sources and reduce electricity bills by as much as 75 percent.
A Step Forward for Kenya's Renewable Energy Goals
The partnership furthers the collective interest of individual members, while at the same time being in line with the wider renewable energy ambitions of Kenya. Sam Deng, Director of Solar at StarTimes, elucidated on the dual benefits of the initiative: it advances the course of renewable energy adoption and at the same time offers financial empowerment for educators and other Sacco members. This new initiative is believed to have a multiplier effect, influencing the uptake of clean energy far beyond what conventionally would be expected across the nation.
Mwalimu Sacco and Startimes have led the way in how cooperative societies can contribute toward the achievement of sustainable development through low-interest financing for solar installations. This deal can revolutionize energy consumption in Kenya, especially now that more and more citizens are gaining access to affordable and greener energy solutions.
